This client is a pianist, and he thought about the light in his home the way he thinks about music — as something with rhythm and movement, meant to shift through the day rather than sit at one setting. He had documented all of it before we ever met: how each room should behave hour by hour, how his art and memorabilia should be lit, how one scene should give way to the next without anyone noticing the transition. Then the company he'd hired closed its doors. The money was gone, the work was unfinished, and his move-in date hadn't moved.

He didn't scale back the vision, so neither did we. We came in and rebuilt it — every fixture in the residence replaced with Ketra housings on a Lutron HomeWorks system, each light individually addressable for intensity, color, and temperature. The home now runs on a circadian schedule that starts cool and bright in the morning and warms into a golden ambient glow by evening, with scenes driven by time of day, occupancy sensors, and logic the client wrote himself. His automation guide became our specification document.

The practical challenge was doing all of this inside a finished residence in three weeks. Fixtures came out of completed ceilings and new ones went back in under tight tolerances. Linear lighting was added under cabinets, at mirrors, and behind the bar, with remote drivers placed where they'd stay out of sight. And because the client had already lost a significant investment, we restructured our pricing so the original vision could be completed rather than trimmed. His favorite detail isn't in any of the drawings: the shades raise a few inches on their own so his cat can watch the water.
